Emseal

Gasketing Tapes are typically used between "layers" of logs and occasionally in the notches.. (Take a look at the pictures in the Emseal area for examples of this in both handcrafted and milled log construction). 

Classic     Acrylic

EMSEAL Classic LOGHOME TAPE provides UV stability and sealing ability, as well as resistance to aging and to vermin (bugs, rodents, birds, etc.) For these same reasons, asphalt has been the choice for sealing ships, roofs, foundations, roads and many other structures throughout history. As a result it is not unreasonable to expect that Emseal Classic Loghome tape will last the life of your log home. 

The open-cell foam is impregnated, compressed to the size of the opening to be sealed, and shipped in reels. The stored strain-energy of compression in the foam means continuous back-pressure is exerted against the logs. This pressure, combined with the adhesive nature of the impregnation, assures reliable adhesion to both upper and lower log surfaces. As the logs shrink and expand with seasonal temperature and humidity changes, long-term sealing contact with the log surfaces is maintained. 

Note: The minor trade-off for this performance is slight smudging on surfaces which make contact with the tape, for example: on logs, paper and skin during handling. EMSEAL Acrylic  LOGHOME TAPE EMSEAL is an expanding, open-cell, foam tape. It was developed in the early 1980s with a water-based, acrylic impregnation. 
Specifically developed for its compatibility with wet sealants such as polyurethanes and silicones, it is free from visible contact staining and is compatible with chinking and the stains and preservatives often used in the log home industry.
EMSEALAcrylic LOG HOME TAPE is particularly suitable for construction methods such as Swedish cope or flat on flat, where sealant tape is installed at the outer edges of the logs AND where sprayed-on log sealer or stain may come in contact with the tape.
Its high-temperature stability makes it an excellent choice for use around metal skylights.

Stack-n-Seal is a dual-purpose sealant designed to not only serve as an internal seal,
but also provide excellent adhesive qualities. Stack-n-Seal can be used in conjunction
with all foam gasket systems or it may be used alone. Stack-n-Seal will remain flexible and help to maintain a seal should the logs move or twist over a period of time.

Oakum can be used between the logs to seal out the elements...and in traditional wooden boat building...and some plumbing with caste iron pipes...
Made of Natural Fibre Jute that is treated with Bentonite (a naturally occuring mineral often used in sealing ponds), and oil to resist water infiltration.
Use as is to fill larger gaps, or separate the strands for smaller areas.

This is an oiled product (Been told it's the equivalent of 7-800 wt and doesn't easily burn at lower temperatures...plumbers that are packing caste iron joints are pouring 1000 degree lead on it to create the seal). 

NOTE: To use as a backing material for chinking or caulking material, it's best to place a bond breaking tape over the surface so the caulking/chinking material is not in direct contact with the Oakum. We don't recommend the Oiled Oakum for use in a lateral where the pressure of the logs will squeeze the Oakum...this may push some of the oil out of the Oakum and down your logs.

1 lb. is 3 strands 27" long...the length is due to this traditionally being the length used by Plumbers to seal the drain joint on caste iron drain pipes...they would then pour melted lead over the Oakum to create the final seal. Strands can be unravelled if needed.

This is 12 "ropes" running approximately 1' x 27"

Approximately 50' in length, 2-14" diameter is made up of  8 strands of 3/4" diameter with a twist every 18" or so...Each of the 7 strands can be untwisted into 4 1/4" strands...thus if you untwist it all the way you'll have approximately 1600 lf. of 1/4" diameter dry Oakum.

Oakum is quite different from the oiled...here there is only a light 'wetting' of oil to keep the dust down. Perhaps not enough to discourage bugs.
