Chain Saws

Gas powered chainsaws often need to be retuned for your local conditions and use. We'll use the example of the popular Husqvarna 338xpt to give you an idea of what this means.
The Husqvarna 338xpt is preset, (tuned), at the factory in Sweden to run at 13,000-13,500 rpm. At sea level this can be increased to 14,500. However, chainsaw carvers and log builders who are not running the saw under load, (e.g. the saw is not in the wood, rather the tip is simply brushing the wood), should tune their saw to 12,000-12,500 rpm. Of course, this also varies depending on land elevation, humidity, and even whether the fuel you're using has a 10% ethanol mixture. (Often the case in the winter months. There's usually a sticker on the gas pumps advising you of this. Terrible for saws).
To simplify this a bit, you can detune by making the fuel mixture richer, which makes the rpms (revolutions per minute), drop.

Saw Chain

Saw chain can be frustrating to order. After all, you want to get to "workin", not have to stop and figure out stuff like pitch, gauge, # of drivers and all the other particulars that go into putting together the best package for your needs. We're trying to make this section a bit less painful, so settle down and get to reading. For those of you new to the subject you might just learn a thing or two. For those in the know, you just might catch a mistake or three. (and I'm sure will be more than happy to let me know about it). . . :)

When ordering saw chain you will need to know the pitch and gauge of your saw chain. This is normally specified by stating the pitch first, then the gauge, (e.g. 3/8-pitch 050-gauge is shown as 3/8 050).
It also helps if you know the number of cutters or drivers as different brands/models of saw can have the same "call size" to the  bar yet use a different length chain. (drivers are the part of the chain the passes around the saw sprocket, thus "driving" the chain. It also travels in the groove in the bar and keeps the chain from falling off the bar.....ah usually). Another way to think of the drivers is this...hold up a loop of chain, it looks a bit like a sharks tooth necklace doesn't it? Only the sharks' teeth are on the inside of the necklace (e.g. loop) and we call them drivers or drive links.

Note: Currently, we only carry chain in the 050 gauge. This is the most common for small and medium sized saws which are used in log building and Chain Saw carving. Be careful with some of the smaller saws. They may (rarely) come with .043 gauge which isn't quite wide enough of a groove for the 050 gauge chain to travel in.

Click here to determine the pitch and gauge of your saw chain.
For 1/4 pitch chain used in Chain Saw carving try here!

Note: All saw chain is inherently dangerous to operator and bystanders. "Kickback" has been known to throw a saw 20' over and behind the saw operator. (if the operator was lucky enough not to catch the recoiling saw full on). Many of the chains we carry for carving are purposely provided without the safety guard link that is common on consumer chain. This allows for a more aggressive cut and is generally preferred by log builders, chainsaw carvers, and others using a saw for other than consumer purposes.

Saw Chain

Ripping chain is recommended for use only in chain saw mills, not for hand-held use. (These are not low kick back type chains.
Currently available in 3/8 .050, 3/8 .050 lo pro or 325 050, in the style made by Granberg.
We also offer the 3/8 .050 in the "Oregon" style (with this style the cutting edge angle is the major difference). Very easy to sharpen.
All are sharpened with a round file.
Ripping chain is used on chainsaw mills, such as the Mark III.
To convert a regular cutting chain, (which is set up to "cross cut"), to a "ripping" chain the folks at Granberg adjust the cutter teeth into a pattern of 4 different teeth configurations, then repeat. The first and second cutting teeth, (called the center clearing cutters) are "blunted" to 0 degrees, the 3rd and 4th (called the scoring cutters), are sharpened to 20 degrees. Additionally, the 3rd and 4th in the series are "narrowed" lengthwise. There is also some adjustment to the raker depth. (The Low Pro style only has full clearing cutters as it has a low 1/4" kerf). A schematic is shown at lower right.

Caution: This modified chain yield an extremely aggressive edge capable of  severe kickback that could result in serious injury.
Do not use for cross cutting

Cutterless chain is for use with the Log Wizard and Log Master. These are powered by saw chain. As such you don't want the standard saw chain cutters to "nick" the work you're doing with the planer blades of the Log Wizard. As the Log Wizard comes with two sprockets we offer the three types of cutterless chain that will fit. (both 3/8 and 3/8 low pro will fit on the 3/8 sprocket). Although the Log Master comes with a chain guard to protect the chain while grooving out logs, we recommend upgrading to cutterless chain for safety.
Note: If you need a different length of chain, Contact Us!

16" chain $24.00
18" chain $27.00 (used with 16" bars)

20" chain $30.00
24" chain $36.00

To determine how many drive links this will be...do the following. Take the chain off the bar you're intending to use the cutterless chain on and count the number of drive links. To this add 6 drive links to account for the fact you need a chain 2" longer than normal to accomodate the Log Wizard or Log Master.

Note: Click HERE to determine pitch and/or # of drive links

Remember: If you're purchasing a cutterless chain to go with your Log Wizard or Log Master, you'll need a chain that's 2" longer that the "call" size of the bar. Thus a 16" bar will need a 18" chain.

Chain is available in a Safety guard (double raker) and the Original (single raker).
Rakers are the item directly in front of the cutting edge of the tooth and they control the amount of cut a tooth can take. A safety raker (also called double bumper in some areas) reduces the chance of kickback compared to the Original style (sometimes called Pro style as it's a bit faster cutting).

Note: A bar is actually longer than it's stated size...the stated length is roughly the cutting area of the bar (from saw to tip of bar), not including the part of the bar that's hidden behind the clutch cover plate.

Debarking, Planing, Carving - Sculpting Tools

A Safety warning is in order here. The following tools, while performing their specific tasks quite remarkably, can be dangerous and unforgiving with just a slip of the hand, foot, or concentration. Here's a warning that comes along with the purchase of the Log Wizard. It's appropriate for any of these tools.
When using the Log Wizard, Log Master, or any other tool for that matter it is important to keep in mind the safety aspects of usage.
To start, let's look at protective clothing:
Approved work boots with steel toes
Kevlar leg protectors
Long sleeved garment
Reinforced gloves
Hearing Protectors
Protective face shield
We address some of these items on our Safety Gear page. We'll add the others as time allows.

Also, remember that to obtain the maximum performance from your Log Wizard, please ensure that your logs are securely mounted to the operating surface. We recommend working with all logs at ground level. To avoid the possibility of kick back, never approach your work "straight in". (don't plunge cut)
Log Wizard - ca0030

Attaches to most any chainsaw and is a handy tool for debarking, making log railings, and notching. Peeling, minor notching, and "sharpening" the end of a log are all possible with the log wizard. Band Saw Mill owners use one to "clean" the log prior to milling to keep their band saw blades sharp. One of our "top sellers" at the log home shows. Log Wizard comes with both 3/8" and .325 sprockets.

Note: Cutterless chain is available at $1.50 per bar inch. Bar length for cutterless chain is calculated at stated length of bar + an additional 2" for the log wizard. (ex: a 16" bar will need a 18" chain x $1.50 = $27.00). We'll need to know whether you're using the 3/8" or the .325 sprocket. Check HERE for cutterless chain.

See below for our combination 16" bar, drilled to accept either the Log Wizard or the Log Master,  and cutterless chain.

Click here to determine the pitch and gauge of your saw chain.

Note: People have asked about using the Log Wizard with an electric chainsaw. Reports we have show varying success (or lack thereof). Generally electrics are underpowered and will tend to skip, bite and wear out the saw when using with the Log Wizard.
The manufacturer reports testing the largest electric then on the market (80's) and found it worked okay, however it led them to not recommend using an electric.

The Log Master bears a resemblance to the Log Wizard; however, it's uniqueness lies in it's capabilities.
The Log Master is designed as a groover and gouger.
Used to cut grooves for wiring or plumbing as well as hollowing out rails to be used as rain gutters.
Wood carvers also enjoy the Log Master's ability to hollow out short log leftovers to create flower pots etc. that are used to decorate the yards and gardens around log homes.

The Log Master is fitted with two 1 1/4" blades that are flat on one end to give a square corner finish and are curved on the other end to give a radius finish.

A steel chain guard is also included with the Log Master for added safety.
Each Log Master has a gauge included for setting the blades after they have been changed from one function to the other.
These blades can also be sharpened several times.
Sharpening should be done by a qualified blade sharpener.

Beam Machine Makes any chainsaw an easy-to-use portable sawmill.
Mounts on a 2X4 . You then nail to a log wall to make a straight cut.
Used to cut a prow, (angled cut), to the roof line and to trim the decking to length.
Good for door and window cuts though not as precise as the mini mill.
Swivel clamp allows for easy starting cuts when "plunge" cutting opening cuts.
A simple tool that you'll find lots of uses for. Takes only a minute to bolt it to your chain saw bar. Lightweight and very portable. Easy to toss in the back of the pickup and forget it until you need it. It's that small.

G555B Mini-Mill This compact milling tool attaches to your chainsaw and comes with 12 feet of "V" track. V track is screwed to edge of guide board, (2x6 works well),  to stabilize cut.
This tool is also used for more precise cutting of door and window openings than can generally be achieved by free hand.
Does not have the swivel clamp to allow for plunge cuts as with the Beam Machine. (Many builders either use prior to reassembly of header log or pre-cut header log to allow for insertion of bar in preparation of the cut).
Additional track may to ordered. Many builders will set up 6' of track on one guide board and 10' or so, on another board for cutting log ends and larger openings.ca0045-mini4.jpg (27591 bytes)

Portable Winches

Capstan Winch
Drum style Winch

Gas powered portable winches excel for long remote pulls. You're not tied to the vehicle battery. You can carry these units by hand, back pack, vehicle, boat, pack animal. You can pull loads long distances or continuously without overheating the motor or loss of pulling power.

CAPSTANS VS WINCHES

The distance a winch can pull is limited by the length of cable that can be wound onto the spool. Pulling wire off the spool and leveling it before you start to pull is not an easy process. The user must use care to be sure the cable winds evenly on the spool. The cable can pull down into the spool of wire and get caught (backlash) and be very difficult to remove. A capstan has none of these problems.

An engineering quirk of a winch is that the pulling power is less as the spool fills with cable. For example: A winch that will pull 4,000 pounds when the spool is empty (wrapping cable on a 3 core) will only pull 2,000 pounds when the drum is full (to a 6 diameter). The pulling power of a capstan is always the same.

Simpson Capstan Winch

Use this with low stretch polyester rope instead of wire cable..  A light pull on the rope will start the winch pulling. Continue taking in rope as the winch does the work. Stop pulling and the winch stops pulling. Capstan style allows for virtually unlimited length of rope as the rope doesn't coil onto the drum. The winch can be anchored away from the load or tethered to the load with the rope secured at destination. Excellent for hunting, four wheeling, pulling logs, loading a boat onto the trailer, or up a steep slope. Used by rescue personnel for it's light weight and dependability. 10 year warranty for the capstan unit. Comes with tethering cable. Line speed varies from 22 to 42 feet per minute depending on load and motor size.

Simpson Capstan Rope Winch is available in two models, either powered by a lightweight gas engine or attaches t
o most chainsaws. It pulls up to 2,500 lbs. It's excellent for pulling big game animals, boats, and for winching stuck vehicles out of extreme locations.

You can pull loads long distances without overheating the motor or experiencing loss of pulling power. Rope is safer than cable if it breaks or snaps back.

The capstan type winch is unique, you're not limited to the length of cable that a drum will hold and the pulling power does not decrease as the drum fills as is the case with drum type winches. You can take up slack in the winch line or play out line, by hand, without running the winch.

Model CS attaches to your chain saw. Saw must be less than 3.5 cubic inch. Needs 3/8" pitch drive sprocket.  2500# capacity depending on size of Chain Saw.

U
se for log building, skidding logs, freeing stuck equipment.
60' - 80' per minute line speed.
Greater capacity than Simpson winch. Up to 4000lbs with larger saws. Weighs 35lbs with cable.
Very popular in remote locations.
This is a extremely rugged, well made unit. 1 year manufacturers warranty on material and workmanship.
Model 400MK2 comes with a single drum and 150' of 3/16" cable. (4,200 lbs.)
Also available with 250' of 1/8" cable. (2,000 lbs.)

Note: There is some disagreement on whether the size of the saw has any bearing on the pulling power of the winch. Years ago, Mr. Lewis ran a side by side test with a smaller electric saw and a mid size gas saw and found the pulling power/speed was virtually the same. So take the info as offered. Some will still insist on using the big 5 cu. in. saws and wearing themselves out packing it around. Manufacturer suggests a chainsaw in the 50cc to 90cc range with 70cc most popular.
Chainsaw is not included in the price.
